It's been a busy last few weeks for me in DC. I'm actually blogging en route to DC from NYC.
The K5 crew and I have launched a new party @ Midtown called Flow Tuesdays! If you're in DC you should definitely check it out. This week, Howard University students get in free with their student ID. Take a look at the flyer below...cute right?!?!
The launch was pretty cute! My sis Q came out, and we had 10 VIP tables with complimentary champagne. Everybody had a great time and we're hoping we pack this building this week!
I definitely feel a growing hunger to do more...make more money, be more successful. It's taking it's toll though...lack of sleep and high stree levels are what I'm giving these days. Some days I come out of the house and would rather no be seen...but so far we've been doing pretty good and that's something to be thankful for. The definiing moment was when Q said he was proud of me...that made my night!
A few days after the launch I high-tailed it up to NYC for Stringbean's 21st. We planned this trip before we broke up and the friendship thing has been working out so we figured, why not still go through with it. It was a great idea!
WE got here late Friday night and stayed in. Then Saturday we shopped like crazy...well as crazy as we could get with the money we had. WE spent most of our time in SoHo...we made it over to Bower St. as well and then walked through the Village. SB turned 21 at 12am Sunday morning, so we waited until then to go out and hit three clubs...no of which were really his speed. We eventually headed back to the apartment we were staying in and passed out. Sunday was pretty chill...we did a late brunch in Hell's Kitchen, and then took a slow stroll through Central Park. We happened upon Bergdorf's and I had to go inside. It was like walking through a museum or art gallery. Soooooo many beautiful things... After Bergdorf's we caught a cab to CHristopher street and just watched the sun go down (a the kids cruise) on the Pier. We had dinner and had a few drinks at Hanger56 I think it was called...it reminded me of the Fireplace or the Mill.
That was basically our weekend in the nutshell. Pretty mellow for the most part. I feel in love with NYC again, and I know I'm going to move here one day.
Now I'm heading back to DC. I have work tomorrow and then the party tomorrow night. It just doesn't stop! I'm looking forward to being home and sleeping in my bed, even if it's only for a couple of hours at a time!
I have to first apologize for being so distant these last few weeks. I've been busying myself with a number of new exciting projects both in the office and outsides of it. Between the side hustles, the dream following and being Joey Bahamas the most stable things, this blog for example, has been suffering. Often the only time I've been able to stop for a second is when I'm having a cigarette...and that's not healthy now is it? I've finally settled into my sofa at home, turned on Miles Davis and thought it was a good time to write. These two weeks have been a whirlwind, a marathon...my body is feeling it, my mind is fraying a little, but all in all: I'm just fine!
New York was a blast. Got to see Tyra Banks up close and somewhat personal. She doesn't see like a very warm person...she's no Oprah...no shade! I had too much fun with the c-workers I went up with, and bought some really nice new pieces thanks to Uniqlo, Topman and Patricia Fields! I got to see the Glinton Girls (my girlfriends from home), and in true Bahama Mama's fashion they had me drunk off my ass, with a cocktail waiting for me in the morning.
The day after I got back to DC, I did drinks with Q, Yanique and Kenny at Loriol Plaza and then rushed over to the party I help throw at Be Bar. It was a bit of a slow night for the most part, and a little disappointing. But, that's what happens when a party winds down.
I think I spent Friday in, but I can't really remember and Saturday, the Glinton Girls were in town with their parents. Through a series of unfortunate events, we did Ibiza, Mirrors (sort of), Lucky Bar and then the Sz Gallery for a (slightly) after hours drink and bad Chinese food. Broken but not defeated, I ended up at JR's, Current and Eye Bar on Sunday...
...it's been like this for 3 weeks almost. And, that's not including work and sometimes eating once a day, and keeping a supply of Zicam on hand.
I don't pretend like it doesn't have anything to do with SB and I breaking up. That would be a lie. But also, I feel invigorated and inspired to do, think up, realize everything I can at this very second and it's not leaving much time for Joey...Joey's things, dreams, and desires are crowding out Joey...it's funny how when you stop procrastinating you can sometimes drown yourself in your own productivity. I've always had a bit of issue with the extremes...I'm going to work on that.
Right now though, it's just me and Miles. I'm letting him do to me what he likes...and breathing while he does it, and that's a great change from about an hour ago. ______________________________________________________________________________________ Song du jour: "So What"- Miles Davis
This weekend was an absolute conjure! My brother Milan came down from NYC on Friday to take care of some business in the District. That should've been first sign that this was going to be a wild weekend. After spending the first part of Friday evening with my students at Howard, I got home to wanting to go out. After some debate we headed out to Halo. Milan met a date there and I sipped on my Tokyo Ice-tea on one the couches and eventually began holding court. Before you knew it, we were on our way to Anne's. He and I were starving and the burgers were surprisingly. When did Anne's start trying to give trendy steakhouse, but keep the same dusty staff? I got my life though. After that we went home and passed out. That was just the beginning...
I woke up Saturday afternoon to a text from my sister Gabriel. It was a lovely day outside and he was drinking on the roof deck of his U St. apartment. It took me too hours to get dress, but with my hair down and the sun out I pumped up U St. When I got there, within the first five mins there was a rum and coke in hand. What can I say? My sister works quickly!!! My friend and co-worker James joined us and Gabe's roommate Tony was already there. We lit up the hookah and as the sun went down moved the party into the sun room. With Beyonce on the radio and an abundance of laughter the liquor began to sink in and the world began to sparkle.
Just at that moment, my sister Q texted me. Apparently she wanted a dirty drink and new just where to get it...the Fireplace. I got myself together for the walk home and said good bye to folks. I was at more door in what seemed like a second. I reached in the mailbox for the key, and it wasn't there. I thought back, I told Milan to leave the key in the mailbox didn't I?!?!? Whether I did or didn't...it didn't matter I was locked out of my apartment. I called Milan hoping he be near by, and mid-conversation my phone died. I was stranded, couldn't tell Q I was going to be late, and had no idea how to get into my home. Just then...my stunt queen instincts kicked in. I pulled an old AmEx gift card out and jimmied the lock on my apartment door. Kids, don't try that at home. I called Milan, who was on his way (lol) and told him not to bother...performed the quick change of all quick changes and hit it down the street to Dupont circle.
Q was already at the Fireplace when I got there, but I could tell we wouldn't be there for much longer. After one drink and a text from our brother Borzou, we walked over to Pinache. We met Borzou, Sohal and Jorge for a drink and then we all decided that K St. would be the next best stop. We did Lima Lounge and then Q and I moved to Tattoo. From Tattoo we went to see Jon, Nik and Abena at Ruth Chris. We conjured with the trade and Q took nasty pictures of Abena drunk...it was ovah! Then Q and I pumped to Chinatown for food and headed home in the opposite direction....whew.
Still not done...
Even though I didn't get into bed until like 5 Sunday morning, I was up at 11 am for some weird reason(read: dehydration). I wasn't looking forward to it, but I had a meeting with the "The Network" at 3 Sunday afternoon. "The Network" is a group of DC promoters that work together to pomote each others' parties. After that essentially 3 hour meeting, I head to Gabe's house yet again for drinks. He had a couple bottles of champagne and it was a lovely day in the city yet again. We drank and read and smoked hookah, and then we decided to go to Current for a party with an open bar. Gabe, James and I headed over, walked in and as soon as I came up the stairs I heard my name being shouted everywhere. Howard Cromwell and my fellow promoters from K5 Productions was there and taking full advantage of the free bar. Special shout out to Carlos the bartender...he's over!
I had originally decided to go home after Current, but Howard and the rest convinced me to go to Eye Bar. I went, walked in, vogued a little, and basically sat down, legs crossed the entire night. I wasn't dressed in a way that was conducive to giving a lot, so I was unbothered...there will be pictures. Eye bar closed at 2 and I was in bed at 3...an end to a magnificently long, fabulously family oriented, drunken weekend! Such a conjure....
NYC, Tyra Banks and the Glinton Girls
This weekend may have been to worse to do give everything I was giving. I'm heading to NYC tomorrow with James (see above), Lauren and Josh. Lauren scored VIP tickets to the Tyra Banks show. There is also a scheduled trip to the new Topshop store in SoHo...which is what I'm really excited about...no shade! I also get to see, the lovely, incomparable Glinton girls...my Bahamian sisters. I'm so excited to see Meryl and Rissa....woohoooooo!!!!
I'll be tweeting from NYC and through everything Miss Tyra Banks gives, and when my phone wasn't dead I was tweeting from club to club. Why aren't you following me? That's tired....
